David Sarma: VFX | Design | Research

I am a VFX Artist working in film and commercials, and Designer. I work currently as a retoucher and compositor (Box Studios, Framestore NY, Phosphene, Smoke and Mirrors NY), previously as a Houdini effects artist and lighter. I work also in Design and Animation (Cultures of Resistance, Embassy Row), designing for motion, print, and web, developing and maintaining brand identity. I have worked in web design at the NASA-Goddard Institute for Space Studies, designed for a photography studio (Capsule Studio, NY Event Space), and worked as a photo retoucher.

I work in pipeline settings for visual effects, and in-house, working directly with clients for design. I am equally comfortable communicating creatively, guiding art-level decisions, generating solutions and crafting a message; and executing at a technical level, figuring the best means to arrive at a desired goal. I take a problem-solving approach to both creative and technical work, backed by solid technical background (BA Math, NYU 2002; MFA Computer Art, SVA 2008) and articulate communication of creative decisions. I bring creativity to projects as needed, drawing from experience working for artists and directors (director Michel Gondry, Partizan; sculptor Robert Lazzarini, Deitch Projects; the Madagascar Institute), and from my own background with dance performance, drawing, photography, and music. I bring knowledge of a breadth of topics developed from experience in research, as well as a sense for which areas may be relevant and useful, and how to make them so. Finally, I provide a level of discipline to develop focused and consistent approaches, working within a given style or pipeline; and to meet production deadlines by anticipating problems, setting a pace, and keeping things moving.
